I'm not sure why the second example isn't working for you, but I can attest to the fact that it /does/ work. pre_get_posts alters all instances of WP_Query, not only the main query, and this happens back end and front end and on all pages.

The issue had to do with a few misplaced and missing query tags. I'd really appreciate help with this. Also i'm using newest WP. Here's the relevant codex section on that argument.
